BOISE, Idaho — Fish in a pond in Blackfoot will soon die as water levels are quickly dropping. In response, an order was issued to allow anglers to catch as many fish as possible.

On Friday, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) announced a salvage order for the Jensen Grove Pond as water levels are dropping due to increased irrigation needs. The fish that remain from the May restocking, where over 2000 rainbow trout were placed in the water, will not survive when water levels become unsuitable.

The order is effective Sept. 20 and will run until Oct. 30.

The salvage order will implement the following for Jensen Grove Pond:

  • Fish may be taken by any method except use of firearms, explosives, chemicals, or electric current.
  • All bag, possession, size, and number limits are suspended.
  • A valid Idaho fishing license is still required.
  • No live fish may be transported from the pond.

IDFG said the City of Blackfoot uses the pond to support "aquifer recharge efforts in the upper Snake River Plain," so the lowering of water occurs annually to meet needs.

For more information about the salvage order, call IDFG at (208) 232-4703.
