COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho — Idaho State Police (ISP) opened State Highway 97 in Coeur d'Alene after freezing rain and poor road conditions closed the roads earlier on Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) freezing rain will stay in the region until Sunday afternoon. The ongoing rain and snow from Wednesday's snowstorm are causing slick road conditions, and officials are urging drivers to be careful on the road. Officials around the Inland Northwest are telling drivers to stay safe while the roads stay icy in the weekend's freezing rain.
ISP investigated multiple crashes in the area during the closure on Sunday morning. ISP said drivers should stay cautious while driving, as temperatures in North Idaho are expected to drop below freezing again in the evening.
Nez Perce County Sheriff's Office (NPCSO) asked drivers to avoid using Lapwai Road and Bever Road. NPCSO said the roads are extremely icy and to use other routes when driving in the area. Officials reported the roads were fixed as of 12:40 p.m on Sunday afternoon.
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) said many areas are experiencing light freezing rain.
