BOISE -- Thousands of people are in the Treasure Valley for Jaialdi, a Basque festival celebrating the region's rich history and culture.
Because of the large amount of people expected to head to the Basque Block, officials are shutting down roads to accommodate crowds.
The Ada County Highway District says 6th Street from Main to Front will be closed from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Thursday, Friday and Sunday.
Boise police officers want to make sure people know about the traffic changes, which could cause congestion.
"If you're not coming down to the festival, I'd definitely find an alternative route," said Officer Josh Coltrin. "We'll go over these types of situations in briefing so that the officers who are on shift are aware of them."
During big events like Jaialdi, on-duty police officers are on alert.
"They'll hang around the area so that if there is response needed they can get there quickly," added Coltrin.
Jaialdi started on Tuesday and each day, there's been a lot of foot traffic in and around the Basque Block.
"It's harder to get around. The streets are busier," said Dan Hampton, a Boise City Taxi driver.
He's noticed an increase in business since the Basque festival started.
"I'd say business has picked up. I think I had about four or five runs down here yesterday and five today," he said.
On Thursday afternoon, Boise City Taxi had up to 16 drivers out and about, ready to pick people up.
Uber drivers have also been busy this week.
"These last few days there's been a real spike in business," said Perry Merkel. "I'm meeting people from all over."
Jaialdi organizers expect at least 35,000 people to take part in Jaialdi. Police officers understand there's reason to celebrate, they just want to make sure people celebrate safely.
"It's expected to be a pretty big event and there will be a lot of traffic everywhere," said Officer Coltrin.
