BOISE, Idaho — Judge David Gratton was named Idaho's next chief judge of the Court of Appeals for the next two years, effective at the beginning of January, according to a news release from the Idaho Supreme Court.
The Court of Appeals consists of four judges. In groups of three, the judges hear and review appellate cases from Idaho's trial courts as assigned by the Idaho Supreme Court.
As chief judge, Gratton will preside over the Court of Appeals and oversee its administration.
Of the current judges on the Court of Appeals, Judge Gratton has served the longest. His first seat was assigned in 2009.
He was appointed by the chief justice of the Idaho Supreme Court, Chief Justice G. Richard Bevan, per court rule and state law. The appointment was assigned on Dec. 1, marking Gratton's fourth term serving as chief judge.
"Judge Gratton is a long-tenured jurist in Idaho and an outstanding leader. His deep experience on the Court of Appeals will continue to be a boon," Chief Justice Bevan said. "I look forward to working with him more closely."
Gratton is a native of Emmett. He was an attorney at a Boise law firm for 20 years before being appointed to the appeals court by Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter. He was the first individual be appointed to the court's fourth seat, as legislature created the position just one year prior.
Judge Gratton succeeds Chief Judge Jessica Lorello, who remains on the court.
