Kohberger defense files motion to allow street clothes at public hearings

The motion suggests that allowing Kohberger to wear street clothes, instead of jail attire, in court will help with prejudice.

BOISE, Idaho — Bryan Kohberger's defense team has filed a motion to allow him to wear street clothes in public hearings, as opposed to jail attire.

The motion to wear street clothing to public hearings is so images of Kohberger taken in court look different from one another.

The motion states that this is heavily in part to the media coverage of the case and the "vast dissemination of images of Mr. Kohberger," the motion said.

"Much of the media coverage and social media posts focus on Mr. Kohberger’s appearance. Authorizing Mr. Kohberger to wear street clothing to all public hearings is one way to reduce potential for prejudice," it continued.

The motion states that in the days following Kohberger's transfer to Ada County, and throughout the motion drafting time, the defense team was aware of at least 900 media stories regarding their defendant.

Kohberger is accused of killing four University of Idaho students in Nov. 2022, and recently had his trial moved out of Latah County, where the crimes were committed. The trial was moved also in part due to prejudice, after a survey revealed a likely impartial jury in Latah County.
