BOISE -- The Ada County Highway District Commission has made an emergency decision to close Alto Via Court and part of Strata Via Way due to landslide risk ahead of what is anticipated to be a wet couple of days.
The closures affect a residential area near Table Rock where one home has already shifted and another home has shown signs of stress due to the ground's movement.
Crews started looking into the problem early last month when the ground started moving between 1-2 inches a week.
It has caused the sidewalks to buckle and break and the pavement to crack.
ACHD has made repairs, but can't keep up with the damage.
"We cannot safely maintain our roadways anymore," said Craig Quintana, chief information officer for ACHD. "The sidewalks can no longer be patched. They're not safe."
Signs will go up Friday morning, advising the public that Alto Via is closed at Table Rock Road, and that the far end of Strata Via is also closed to public access.
Residents will be able to enter the area at their "own risk."
The closure could last as long as 30 days.
"It's a complicated situation and everyone is still trying to figure out what exactly is going on," Quintana added.
City of Boise officials say data is still being collected to better understand why the hillside is moving.
"We don't have a strong understanding of what's going on still. We're working toward that, we're pushing toward some kind of an answer on that," said Mike Journee, spokesman for the city of Boise.
He told KTVB experts with the city don't have any information showing this is a larger issue or that there is imminent danger.
"Everything that you guys have seen doesn't show that if we get a ton of rain this whole hillside is just going to give way?" we asked.
"We have no indication, we have no data that that would be the case," Journee said.
ACHD officials say the decision to close roads in the area was made out of an abundance of caution.
The city of Boise plans to meet with homeowners in the area on Friday.
