GERNIKA, Basque Country -- One of the must-see stops in Gernika is a tree that stands where folks used to meet to make laws.
For Basques today, the Tree of Gernika represents democracy and resilience.
In the 1930s after Hitler's Air Force virtually destroyed the town during the Spanish Civil War, the Tree of Gernika still stood tall.
Saplings from a tree that has since died have been planted in Idaho. One is just outside the Basque Museum in Boise.
"The song of the Tree of Gernika talks about grow and spread your roots. Boise is a place where certainly there are strong roots and branches from this tree that go back to the old country," said Patty Miller, Boise Basque Museum Director.
