BPD launches dashboard to provide public with easier access to crime data

The Boise Police Department said it aims for better access to the public about crime reports. The website has data on crime trends, summaries and maps.

BOISE, Idaho — The Boise Police Department (BPD) opens a new crime data dashboard on Monday which aims to help provide better access to the public.

BPD said it has launched a new dashboard that summarizes annual crime reports and tracks trends to enhance public safety responses. They hope the dashboard helps provide the public with quicker and more transparent information to the public.

"While we continue to see a decline in overall crime in Boise, it's important that we give our community the tools to look at more specific details," Boise Police Chief Ron Winegar said. "It's an honor to serve this community and we want to provide a more holistic look at the information we use to make decisions and understand what's happening in our neighborhoods."

The dashboard provides an interactive map to locate crime reports by address, crime type, date and area, BPD said. Personal information and addresses will not be included. Crimes associated with sexual assault will not be included on the map to protect the identity of the victim.

The website also has a Crime Trends Dashboard where residents can place filters to see overall data. According to the website, Boise's total number of crimes has been trending downward over the last five years.

"As a department, we are continuously trying to find new ways to improve and do our jobs better, and these dashboards are part of that effort," Winegar said. "I want to commend the hard work of our data analysis team for taking a large amount of data and putting it in a format that can be searched and easily used by the public."

The BPD provided a list of direct links for the public to access specific data.
