Boise State Physics Department hosting annular solar eclipse event

The event is giving out approved viewing glasses for donations.

BOISE, Idaho — Saturday morning is the much anticipated annular solar eclipse. It is a type of partial eclipse where the moon blocks the sun. Because of the moon's position, the moon appears smaller, so it creates a "ring of fire."

The Boise State University Physics Department will be having an event where people can get a special view of it, weather permitting.

You can see the eclipse in southern Idaho from wherever you can see the sun. People will not be able to see it safely if they don't have special eyewear, according to Dr. Brian Jackson, a professor in the Boise State Astronomy Department.

"If you want to observe this annular eclipse on Saturday, you want to get a pair of eclipse shades. These are not normal sunglasses, so you don't want to use sunglasses to observe the sun. Those don't provide enough protection," Jackson said.

With a $5 donation to the astronomy outreach program, people can get a pair of eclipse shades.

Dr. Jackson also says they will have solar scopes on campus for people to look at the sun. This is a fantastic opportunity because it is not safe to use a regular telescope to look at the sun.
