Local filmmakers to premiere movie about Idaho

'POTATO' tells the story of Idahoans across the Gem State and premieres at the Egyptian Theatre on Tuesday.

BOISE, Idaho — Two years ago, a group of local filmmakers set out to find what makes Idaho - Idaho. Their movie, named after the Gem State's renowned russets, premiers this week.

'POTATO' is an Idaho Film Project that was born out of a post-pandemic idea to capture our culture and what lies at the roots of Idaho - the people.

"Once you get to hear their story and hear their perspective, I think it pulls down maybe the opinions that we have about people," the film's executive producer Shannon McGuire said. "So I really loved how Sidewayz Films took it and brought out the heart of people."

McGuire said the goal of the film is to showcase different perspectives while finding common ground among the Gem State's residents.

"We really wanted to just stop and go, 'What can we do help bring more joy, fun and love back to the community?" McGuire said.

The film's crew started production by going to local events across the state - including rodeos, races and derbies. The film builds upon that by talking to everyday Idahoans and sharing their feelings about living in the state.

"We learned that people love Idaho, they love where they live," McGuire said. "There's this undertone of kindness and just positivity that doesn't always come across when you turn the news sometimes...it was really refreshing to confirm the hypothesis that people love it here.

POTATO premieres Tuesday, June 25 at the Egyptian Theatre in downtown Boise. Tickets for the premiere can be purchased here
