IDAHO FALLS, Idaho — Reed's Dairy in Idaho Falls caught on fire Thursday Jan. 18 around 2:45 p.m. The Idaho Falls Fire Department (IFFD) said the cause of the fire is under investigation and no people or animals were hurt but the building has significant fire damage.
"For many people, Reed's Dairy is a community icon," said Idaho Falls Fire Chief Duane Nelson. "Our firefighters felt the support of our community on scene today. We know we are not alone in saying our thoughts are with the Reed family as they process the loss of this structure and plan their path forward."
IFF said that when crews arrived they saw smoke and heavy flames coming from the attic of the building. Crews were able to totally extinguish the fire and clear the scene by 9:20 p.m. after putting out a hot spot around 8:15 p.m.
The department said crews first began fighting the fire from both the outside and inside but had to switch tactics as it became dangerous for firefighters to stay in the building. They were able to keep surrounding buildings from catching on fire and only one of the structures next to the fire had water damage.
The building was the original milk barn and the roof ended up collapsing.
"There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians. A total of nine fire apparatus responded including five engines, three ambulances, and one ladder truck. A deputy chief, division chief, battalion chief, and two fire investigators responded as well. The Chaplains of Idaho responded to provide support to fire personnel and those affected by the fire. The Idaho Falls Police Department assisted with road closures around the incident to protect the public and allow firefighters the space necessary to respond. Sections of Broadway were closed from Bellin Road to the west of the dairy throughout the response. All roadways are currently open for normal traffic," the fire department stated.
On social media, Reed's Dairy thanked the fire department.
"We are so appreciative of the work the Idaho Falls Fire Department and the Idaho Falls Police Department provided today. We can't thank the community enough for the outpouring of love and prayers," it stated. "This is a devastating day for the Reed family and our Reed's Dairy community but we are lifted up by the support of our customers and community members."
