BOISE, Idaho — According to the United States Attorney's Office in Idaho, Emiliano Jaime Ramos, 41, from Lompoc, California, was sentenced to federal prison Tuesday, Nov. 7 for kidnapping his ex-girlfriend at gunpoint and then transporting her to Idaho where she was eventually rescued by the Nampa Police Department (NPD).
"The bravery of the victim in this case is powerful and I salute the law enforcement officers who rescued her and brought the defendant to justice," said U.S. Attorney Josh Hurwit. "I am also grateful to the victim specialists at the Canyon County Prosecutor's Office and my office who have supported and will continue to support the courageous victim in this case."
Court records show on Dec. 21, 2022, Ramos had approached the victim in a parking lot of a clinic where she worked as a medical assistant in Pismo Beach, California. When she entered her vehicle to leave, Ramos opened the back passenger door and got into the seat behind her, he then ordered her to drive north.
Ramos, who had possession of a large knife and a firearm, made the victim drive from California to Nevada, Oregon and then eventually to Nampa where he checked them into a hotel. When Ramos fell asleep, she grabbed her cell phone, quickly sending a text message to 911.
NPD was dispatched to the hotel and rescued the victim. Ramos was arrested on the morning of Dec. 23 as he exited the hotel room. It was reported to the court that Ramos sexually assaulted the victim and told her that he intended to kill her in Idaho.
Chief U.S. District Judge David C. Nye sentenced Ramos to 15 years in a federal prison followed by five years of supervised release. He pleaded guilty to the crime on August 17, 2023.
