Some states increasing minimum wage in 2024 and Idaho isn't one of them

Idaho's minimum wage is, in 2024, $7.25 per hour.

IDAHO, USA — While more than 20 states increased their minimum wages going into 2024; Idaho did not. The Gem State's minimum wage remains at $7.25 — the federal rate since 2009.

The increases will impact about 9.9 million workers, according to the Economic Policy Institute. U.S. Department of Labor data shows the highest minimum wages for U.S. states and jurisdictions are between $15 and $17 per hour.

Jody Hoff, College of Western Idaho economics instructor, said she was not surprised Idaho's minimum wage remained the same partly because most workers in the state earn more than $7.25.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics states that 1.2% of Idaho workers were paid at or below the minimum in 2022. Hoff expects the hourly rate to remain at $7.25 for the foreseeable future.

"The market itself is keeping wages high right now, and I hope that pressure continues to that young people, who tend to be those minimum wage workers, have that opportunity to continue to earn those higher wages," she said.

Steven Peterson, University of Idaho economics professor, agreed. He said raising the minimum wage in Idaho goes against many Idaho politicians and voters.

Being cautious about the dangers of government intervention regarding pricing is a good idea, he said.

"I think that focusing on other issues such as housing, health care, and, you know, enhanced educational opportunities and job training," Peterson said. "I think those are areas that are probably more productive in my assessment."

Boisean Fuad Aliyev said he would like the federal government to raise the minimum wage across the board.

"[With] inflation and everything, it's too hard to live on $7.25 right now officially in 2024," Aliyev stated.

On a more local level, Aliyev said he wants Idaho lawmakers to talk about the pros and cons of upping the state's minimum wage during the upcoming legislative session, which starts Jan. 8.
