BOISE -- The Ada County Sheriff's Office is investigating a drowning near Fox Brush Drive and Five Mile Road.

They say a 25-year-old man was pulled from the New York Canal after surfing on a wood plank tied to a dam. His foot got tangled in the rope, pulling him underwater.

It's believed that the man had been submerged for 10 to 15 minutes until a passerby was able to free him and pull him to shore. He was not wearing a life jacket.

Firefighters, paramedics, and deputies arrived at the scene and attempted to revive the man. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Deputies estimate the depth of the water to be 20-25 feet. Canals are private property, and canal companies do not permit swimming or playing in them.
