Memories gone up in smoke: Wildfire burns Wapiti Summer Homes

One of the cabin owners told KTVB that six cabins have burned and are a total loss. Flames still pose a threat to more cabins.

GRANDJEAN, Idaho — Wind has whipped up the Wapiti Fire, destroying summer cabins.

The wildfire is burning near Grandjean, and its flames have reached the 18 quaint cabins that make up the Wapiti Creek Summer Homes.

"We've lost six of them now to the fire," Dan Marler, one of the cabin owners said.

Marler's father built the cabin in the early 60's, and his family use the property as a summer home.

"We have a lot of memories in these homes," Marler said.

Security camera footage caught the moments where flames approached and engulfed one of the cabins. While his cabin is safe for now, Marler says the fire is still there - and still a threat.

"It takes a little bit of wind, and it's a long bunch of luck, and you've got fire going in places you don't want. So all the cabins are at risk. We've all just got our fingers crossed," Marler said. "The fire has jumped the river, going across the river and is now approaching into what we call the Bear Creek Cabins."

Resources remain stretched, with the Wapiti Fire at just under 5,000 acres and 10% containment as of Sunday.

"[Crews] tried to put out the fire, but it was growing so fast they just couldn't do anything with it," Marler said. "So everybody backed out and there was nothing we could do but watch it burn."

Memories gone up in smoke.

"It will be a different lifestyle up here, as far as the Wapiti Creek area and the Grandjean area than it has been for years and years past," Marler said. "We've put a lot of our heart and soul into [the cabins]. So to lose them, or even the thought of losing them, is a very emotional situation."
