MERIDIAN, Idaho — The non-profit no-kill animal shelter, Meridian Canine Rescue (MCR), announces the facility's move from Meridian to a 15-acre property in Emmett.
MCR attributed the decision to relocate the shelter to the increased cost of rent at its Meridian location.
MCR primarily rescues formerly owned animals who were surrendered by their owners and are in need of "second chances" through behavioral training.
The organization said the new Emmett location is nestled on a spacious, private, 15-acre farm; and thanks to its larger spread, the shelter can expand its services and potentially extend rescue efforts to farm animals.
Meridian Canine Rescue Executive Director Jessica Ewing said the rescue shelter plans on increasing its capacity by 30% by the end of 2024.
"The dogs will be living in a real home where they can practice life skills and get the training that they need for their adoptive home," Ewing said. "And we'll be able to expand our services to help more people and more kinds of animals."
MCR was able to secure the new Emmett location due to the generous donations and funds raised by Boise and Meridian community members, according to a statement from MCR.
MCR closed on the Emmett property in mid-March. Ewing said MCR intends to begin recruiting volunteers in Emmett by the end of April.
"In less than 48 hours, our online campaign has raised over $39,200," the organization said on their donation page, Shelter Shift: MCR Relocation Campaign. "Our community rallied behind Meridian Canine Rescue and our dogs, surpassing our original goal. We can't thank you enough. You all are amazing!"
