MERIDIAN-- Cake and balloons kicked off the grand opening of a new grocery store in Meridian earlier today. So far, it's the biggest Rosauers supermarket location in Idaho, and the first to open in the southern part of the state.

Jeff Philipps, president of the Spokane-based company, says this a good sign for the economy.

We really feel like there's a real momentum going on in the Boise-Meridian market and we want to be a part of that, said Philipps.

The company has been pushing that momentum forward by hiring 130 people. It's also working with nearby businesses to stock its shelves.

We have a real commitment to supporting local, and when we do that, obviously we like their products in our store, but it helps create jobs for those vendors as well, said Philipps.

Shoppers we spoke with say the store's unique health food section, known as the Huckleberry Market, will now give them even more choices.

I'm really excited about the natural foods store, with these little guys and with her I try to buy as natural as I can, and so its nice to have somewhere that's convenient and close to home, shopper Caliee Gould.

Shoppers also mention that the prices aren't too bad either...

I'm going for the oranges right off the bat, oranges, 29 cents a pound, said Connie Varzzie.

I think they're really comparable to the grocery stores by our house, said Callee Gould.

I said they a good price on the milk, until I noticed it our local brand also, said Joe Yagloski.

The company plans to open even more stores in the Treasure Valley area depending on how well this location does over the next few months.
