MERIDIAN -- A black scorch mark that mysteriously appeared on the football field of Rocky Mountain High School in Meridian had people speculating on Thursday: Was it lightning or vandals that struck?
Initially, police said they thought it was from a lightning strike, but were investigating to make sure it wasn't vandalism.
It's likely, however that lightning was the culprit.
On Thursday afternoon, Meridian police said that everything indicates that lightning caused the blemish on the turf.
Police contacted the manufacturer, and it turns out that it would have taken a very extreme heat source a long period of time to inflict that kind of damage.
Police said they're reviewing video to confirm the strike, but that may take days.
The mark was discovered Thursday morning by a soccer coach.
A school official said this highlights why they clear the stadium whenever thunderstorms are moving through.
