Suspect shot by police after car chase that ended on I-84 in Meridian

Police said the suspect was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

MERIDIAN, Idaho — On Friday, August 2, an Ada County Sheriff's Office (ACSO) spokesperson released more information regarding the incident.

It is reported by ACSO that verbal commands were given to the suspect, and the suspect did not comply with them. The suspect had exited his vehicle with a gun in his hand, ACSO said.

There is a pending investigation on whether the suspect fired rounds or not.

Officers from multiple police agencies, including Meridian, Kuna and Idaho State Police responded to the area of Interstate 84 and Meridian Road Thursday night after a police pursuit ended with the suspect vehicle being stopped along the road and shots being fired.

Ada County Sheriff Matt Clifford said the incident started around 6 p.m. when Meridian police responded to a report of a fight at a parking lot near Eagle and Overland roads.

Officers found a vehicle they believe was connected to the report at 6:16 p.m. and a pursuit started. Officers lost the vehicle near Columbia and Locust Grove and the pursuit was stopped.

At 6:37 p.m., Kuna police found the vehicle and another pursuit started. The chase traveled north on Meridian Road.

During the chase, Clifford said the suspect called dispatch and said he had a gun.

The suspect entered the onramp onto westbound I-84, where a Kuna Police deputy used a PIT maneuver to get the vehicle to stop in the median between the onramp and the interstate.

Clifford said verbal commands were given to the driver and then shots were fired. An Ada County spokesperson said three Kuna police deputies fired their weapons, striking the suspect.

Officials have confirmed that the suspect had a weapon, but it's unclear right now if he fired it.

The officers then started life-saving measures on the man until EMS arrived.

The suspect was taken to the hospital in critical condition. His identity has not been released.

No law enforcement officers were injured.

Boise Police Department will be assigned as the lead agency for the Critical Incident Task Force investigating the incident.

Video taken from the scene showed a vehicle on the grass between the interstate and the onramp.

The incident also caused nearby Roaring Springs Water Park to take precautionary measures.

Officers cleared out the wave pool at the park, which is nearest to where the incident happened.

A spokeswoman for the park told KTVB that no injuries have been reported there and guests are able to leave the park.

The park was hosting a concert event at the wave pool Thursday night, which had a large crowd on hand.

Roaring Springs issued a statement later Thursday night, saying:

"An incident unrelated to Roaring Springs took place across I-84 at the same time a Christian concert was starting on the Wave Pool stage. Police asked Roaring Springs management to clear the Wave Pool and Bearfoot Bay. The rest of the waterpark remained operational, and guests continued to ride attractions at a private event. This incident was unrelated to Roaring Springs and no guests or employees were injured. Roaring Springs will open as scheduled at 11am on Friday."
