MIDDLETON, Idaho — The Middleton City Council voted unanimously Wednesday night to ask Mayor Darin Taylor to resign.
The council's no-confidence vote comes days after Taylor was arrested on a misdemeanor domestic battery charge.
Taylor was booked into the Canyon County Jail Saturday night after police were called out to his Middleton home. The mayor is accused of grabbing an adult family member by her arm or clothing, according to a judge.
The victim told police that the violent conduct "had been going on for years," Judge J.R. Schiller said at Taylor's Monday arraignment.
Taylor, who is currently free on a $2,000 bond, apologized in a letter posted to the Middleton city website.
"The recent events have been sobering and unexpected, and I apologize for the embarrassment. This is a stressful time for me, my family, and the community residents," he wrote. "I am confident we will be able to work through this together. I owe it to my family to not discuss this in the press until the matter is resolved. Then, with the agreement of my family, I will make a statement about this very personal matter."

Taylor added that he planned to take "a few days off" in the aftermath of his arrest.
City Council President Rob Kiser is currently acting mayor of Middleton. Taylor has not indicated whether he will accept the council's call for his resignation, and did not answer calls to his cell phone from KTVB.
The city council is set to meet again March 20.
