CALDWELL -- The sister of the 17-year-old boy accused of stabbing his mother early Tuesday morning at their home in Caldwell is speaking out about what her family is going through.
Twenty-four-year-old Vianey McCabe spent Tuesday with her mother 42-year-old Mildred Ramirez at St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise.
She told KTVB her mother had surgery after being stabbed seven times, and now is recovering. Elizabeth Duncan, spokesperson for St. Al s, said Mildred was listed in fair condition Tuesday.
McCabe spoke about the situation her family is going through on the phone Tuesday from St. Al s. She said her younger brother Jeremiah has had anger problems in the past and all the family wants is for him to get help.
It s not right what he did but I know my mom doesn t want us to hate our brother, said McCabe. She also wants to make it very clear that obviously, you know still loves her child, she doesn t hate him or anything, and she just needs him to get help.
Police responded to their home on College Avenue in Caldwell around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Officers heard Mildred Ramirez screaming and then found her laying on the floor bleeding from several stab wounds.
McCabe said her little brother entered their mother's room as she was falling asleep. The TV was on and the light was on, and Jeremiah turned them off, and that is when the stabbing occurred.
Ramirez is charged with attempted murder and will likely face the charges as an adult.
In court Tuesday afternoon, Ramirez seemed nervous and appeared to fidget as he was arraigned. He told police that he'd been diagnosed with schizophrenia and admitted to smoking spice Monday afternoon.
McCabe said her mother suffered many small wounds and a larger wound where blood has been draining from her lungs. Officers reported seeing stab wounds in her arm, chest and head.
She also said it s a tough situation for her and her family to be in right now.
We are just going to take it step by step, day by day, said McCabe. I am thinking we are going to get my mom physically well enough to come home with us, and with him, I mean it s going to take a lot of time and healing to fully forgive and we will never forget, but lots of time.
Police say when they arrested Jeremiah Ramirez he was covered in blood. And when they questioned him about the crime, he appeared confused and didn t remember the details.
