Mountain biker rescued after crashing on foothills trail

The man was able to call for help on his cell phone.

BOISE, Idaho — Emergency responders rescued a cyclist who was injured in a crash in the foothills Thursday morning.

According to authorities, the man wrecked his mountain bike on Three Bears Trail in the upper foothills, north of Shaw Mountain Road at about 11:15 a.m. The nearly five-mile trail's steep sections make it popular with mountain bikers, but it is less traveled during the week.

The injured cyclist was able to dial 911 and give dispatchers his location after the crash. He suffered a leg injury, according to the sheriff's office, but the severity of that injury is unknown.

Ada County Paramedics spokeswoman Hadley Mayes said Boise Fire used a motorcycle to reach the injured man. He was transported over the rough terrain via ATV to a waiting ambulance.

“The foothills are steep, the trails are narrow so it’s not easy to just, you can't drive vehicles access to get up there on most of the trails in the foothills,” said Tina Lukecart, Batallion Chief, Ada County Paramedics. "It's very common for us to respond to the foothills when it's nice like it is now and people are up there using all the trails."

Ada County Paramedics say the man was familiar with the trail enough to give rescue crews an excellent description on his location, which greatly helped in his rescue.

The injured man's identity has not been released.
