LEWISTON, Idaho -- Idaho's first fishing season for sea-run coho salmon opened on Friday.

One day later, Idaho had a new state record to list.

Ethan Crawford of Moscow caught a 9.4-pound, 31-inch female coho Saturday and obtained the proper documentation.

Fish and Game spokesman Joe DuPont tells the Lewiston Tribune that there are definitely larger fish to be caught and maybe already have been caught.

But he says anglers are probably just eating their catch without thinking about the state record.

The Idaho Fish and Game Commission last week approved a monthlong season on the Clearwater and the Middle Fork of the Clearwater following decades of efforts by the Nez Perce Tribe to bring salmon back after they disappeared about 30 years ago.
