Nampa Fire issues a burn ban until excessive heat watch ends

The Nampa Fire Department issued a ban on open burning until the National Weather Service excessive heat watch expires.

NAMPA, Idaho — The Nampa Fire Protection District issued an immediate burn ban for the city on July 10. The ban comes after the National Weather Service issued an excessive heat watch.

"Extreme temperatures and low humidity have dried out vegetation, creating light, flashy fuels that are conducive to rapid fire spread should a controlled burn get out of control," the department said in a news release. "This not only poses a threat of rapid fire spread but also increases the risk of heat injury to members of the public attempting to burn and to firefighters working to put out the fires."

The department went on to clarify that campfires and cooking fires are still okay, but people should take care to keep anything flammable away from the fire.

The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality stated that when under a burn ban, residents must call their local fire district for anything larger.

The burn ban is also aligned with federal safety requirements because the fire danger on July 10 is very high.
