‘Slow Down’: Nampa Police shares best tips for driving in winter conditions

Nampa Police Corporal Chris Kennedy talks about what you can do to travel safely when slick road conditions occur.

NAMPA, Idaho — With winter approaching, slick driving conditions can wreck commutes, but there are a few things you can do to ensure your and your family's safety.

Nampa Police Corporal Chris Kennedy says the biggest thing you can do to stay safe is to slow down.

"Build your commute time, you know, prep for that accordingly. If it's supposed to be, you know, a worse day the next morning, you know, build another 10-15 minutes into your commute time, and just be prepared to be patient," said Kennedy.

He said you should have a few things in your car in case you get stuck somewhere:

  • Blankets, a spare jacket, and gloves
  • A flashlight, extra batteries, and a shovel
  • Some non-perishable snacks and water

"At the bare minimum, I would have close to a full tank of gas just in case you get stuck someplace. You got to keep the heat on. Blankets are always good things. Jackets, appropriate footwear,” Kennedy said.

If you are in a crash, Kennedy said to make sure you and your passengers are okay, then move your car to a safe location like the shoulder of the road or a parking lot.

"Depending on the severity, you want to get law enforcement involved. That way, we can help facilitate that process even if it's a minor fender bender," said Kennedy

Be sure to call emergency services if there are injuries, take good photos of damage, and make sure to exchange insurance documents, vehicle, driver and owner information.

Another tip Corporal Kennedy shared is to give yourself plenty of space between your car and the next.

Idaho State Law states that windshields be unobstructed and equipped with working wipers, so snow removal from your car is a must. Kennedy said all windows should be clear. Keep an ice scrapper with you to keep them clear.
