NAMPA, Idaho — Nampa families looking to celebrate New Year's Eve but haven’t sorted out a plan for the kids are in line for a unique opportunity with The Harward Recreation Center.
The rec center is hosting a 'lock-in' on New Year's Eve at 7 p.m. lasting until New Year's Day at 8 a.m. The event is open to kids ages 6-12.
Activities include movies, pizza, swimming, and organized games.
"Definitely bring a swimsuit, bring towels, bring stuff to sleep in. Hopefully, you'll sleep!" Education Program Supervisor Leeann Curry said. "If mom and dad want to go out, you know your kids are here and you're good. You don't have to worry about them until 8 a.m. the next morning."
The center hosts multiple lock-ins annually; however, New Year's Eve is routinely their busiest. Registration caps at 75 kids. The center already has set staffing and is firm at a 13-to-1 child-to-supervisor ratio.
"I hate that it has to be that way. But safety is number one," Curry said. "it's great for kids. You know, a lot of the kids that we see for lock-ins are necessarily members of the facilities. So, they're able to come in utilize the pool and the basketball court."
Lock-ins have been in place for many years, according to Curry. Her 22-year-old son went to a lock-in when he was 6 years old; Curry was not involved with the organization yet.
"It's a fun, safe space which you don't always get a lot of anymore," Curry said. "It really is a building where people can just come together."
Roughly 25 spots are still available, according to Curry. Registration costs $27 for members and $32.50 for non-members. Registration can be found here.
