Nampa unites on Veteran's Loop for Memorial Day ceremony

Hundreds gathered on Veteran's Loop on Monday morning.

NAMPA, Idaho — A day to honor the ones who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

Today, veterans, family members and the community lined Veteran's Loop in Kohlerlawn Cemetery to recognize fallen soldiers.

"It's a day, that's both a celebration, of remembering all those great heroes who have gave up their life for our sake," Jeff Virgin, chaplain candidate for the Idaho Army National Guard said. "But it's a great day of mourning, as well."

The event had hundreds of people.

People heard Lloyd Blackwell play "Amazing Grace" on his bagpipes as a wreath was placed on the grave of the unknown dead, and later at the headstone of Joseph H. Murray.

The ceremony included multiple songs, prayers, and a flyover from WWII Era Fighters.

They also heard remarks from Idaho Veterans.

"I went over, I did what I was supposed to do," Veteran, Scott Syme said. "I came home, and I hope I made a difference in the world."

The audience was asked to keep one soldier in mind today. His name is Cap. Benjamin Moulton.

Moulton, 27, died in a helicopter crash in California during a training flight in February.

Memorial Day is also one to honor veterans' family members too.

"The ones they leave behind," Virgin said. "Their friends, their family, must also sacrifice significant parts of their own lives."

Something sparked hope in the Ceremony Emcee, David Ferdinand - the number of children in the crowd.

"I think it sets up our next generation," Ferdinand said. "You saw the boy scouts, the honor guards, you saw all these individuals that had the young people out here. I think it's for that very reason... to make sure that they understood what we need to do in order to remember, especially on Memorial Day.

After 55 years, Sergeant Larry K. Robertson played taps one last time. His last ceremony before entering retirement.
