NAMPA, Idaho — Jorge and Silvia Perez moved to Nampa from California about two years ago. They've always dreamed of opening up their own nightclub.
"We noticed that Nampa ... nightclubs are not too common," Silvia Perez told KTVB. "Nampa is growing... why not bring something fun for people."
With 14 years of experience managing nightclubs in California, they wanted to bring one to their new home and proposed the Warehouse Nightclub. After deliberation with police, the nightclub plans are greenlit and moving forward.
However, Nampa law enforcement initially expressed their concerns about the nightclub, bringing forward potential problems with traffic and parking and putting a pause on plans.
"We didn't know hours of operation, what were they looking at for maximum occupancy and what to expect," Curt Shankel, deputy chief for Nampa P.D. told KTVB. "And that intersection 11th Avenue and First Street South gets pretty congested during the days."
The nightclub is 500 feet away from the Nampa fire and police stations.
Shankel said there are emergency vehicles coming and going throughout the day, "So there was concerns what that would look like and what potential impact that could have."
If the nightclub was to operate during the day, police were also concerned there wouldn't be enough parking in the area. And public lots would already be full.
In a letter to the city dated June 4, the Nampa Police Department recommended the conditional use permit for the project be denied, which was hard for the Perez's to hear.
"Of course you get nervous, because you kind of get afraid of what's going to happen," Perez said.
The city postponed the project's hearing to allow Nampa PD and the nightclub owners a chance to talk. They met on June 19.
"We had a great meeting with them," Shankel said. "They helped explain to us what their hopes are for that business... their hours of operations are later in the evening."
There's also a parking garage a few blocks away, and with later hours space will be available in nearby parking lots. Which eases congestion concerns from Nampa PD.
"We were both on the same page, so it worked out perfect," Perez said. "We were able to work it out with them."
Tuesday, June 25, was the last project hearing with the city, and the city approved it.
Perez said the club will play a variety of music, including live bands and DJ sets.
"Not everybody likes the same thing, so we figured bring a little bit of everything to bring us all together," she added.
