New damage delays opening of Greenbelt path

Crews are replacing asphalt on the Penitentiary Canal Greenbelt Pathway.

BOISE — A popular section of the Boise Greenbelt is closer to being open to the public.

Crews are replacing damaged asphalt on the Penitentiary Canal Greenbelt Pathway -- that's off Warm Springs Avenue near East Junior High School.

The $1.3 million project was scheduled to be completed last month, but officials say the contractor working on the project damaged part of the path just 10 days before it was scheduled to be reopened, and attempts to fix the damages made it worse.

"Any Greenbelt project in the valley is an important project. The Greenbelt is the jewel of the valley, the Boise River and the Greenbelt collectively are really big components of what make Boise and Ada County what they are," said Scott Koberg, Director, Ada County Parks & Waterways.

Officials say it is important to make sure the project is done right, and are asking the public to stay away from the area as to not cause further damage.

No word on when the path is expected to reopen.
