BOISE, Idaho — The 37th Twilight Criterium kicked off the festivities Friday evening, being a kid's bike rodeo.
Lactalis was the main sponsor of the event, which was designed for kids to learn fun skills on their bikes while learning important safety tips. The event occurred from 6-8 p.m. in the College of Western Idaho parking lot in Nampa and it included an obstacle course, games, food, and prizes.
“We just get the kids some skills to learn how to ride around on the sidewalks in the streets of whatever town they live in,” said Mike Cooley, founder of the Twilight Criterium.
Cooley said they try to add new events to the Twilight Criterium each year, which is how the bike rodeo was created.
“It’s all for just the love of bicycling and creating a new culture,” Cooley said.
The Twilight Criterium transforms downtown Boise into a fast-paced race that draws the attention of racers from 21 different states and two countries outside the US, Cooley said. However, about a third of the competitors are local.
Event officials told KTVB that out of the eight races on the Criterium Cup Circuit, Boise's is the most unique, as riders consider the course the ultimate sprinters' classic.
The kids will also ride the same route on a smaller scale in the morning depending on the age group.
The full event is slated to begin on Saturday, June 29. For further information about the event, visit the 2024 Boise Twilight Criterium website here.
