BOISE, Idaho — New changes are coming to unemployment insurance in the State of Idaho. Starting July 7, claimants will have to do five or more work search actions each week to get their benefits compared to two.
The change comes with the passing of a law this legislative session House Bill 686. Representative Kevin Andrus who sponsored the bill told KTVB he doesn't now how tedious the it is but he said with the internet today, five times a week isn't out of line.
"I think if someone is not working then I think they're essentially their full-time job is finding work." he said.
However, Lisa Parker who was let go a month ago told KTVB the increase will take even more time.
"I have a disability, physical and some mental, it's just that it's, it's a struggle for me trying to find the right job," she said.
According to the Idaho Department of Labor, a those on unemployment need to meet "work search action" which can be submitting a resume or job application, attending a job fair, or visiting with the labor department.
Workforce consultants are also available at local Idaho Department of Labor offices to help people in their job search. They can assist with preparing a resume, to finding and applying to a job. The department said that meeting with a workforce consultant also counts towards work search action.
Another resource available is the Idaho Department of Labor navigators - unemployment insurance experts across the Gem State. Navigators can help claimants report their weekly actions and navigate the online portal.
"Many people simply aren't aware of our extensive resources for job seekers — both online and in person," Labor Director Jani Revier said. "If someone needs help finding a job, they can visit any of our eight local offices or 30 mobile locations and we will connect them with job opportunities in their area."
Other services offered by the Idaho Department of Labor include the following:
- Free access to Big Interview - an online tool to practice interviewing skills.
- The Career Acceleration Program - a resource for people who wish to expedite their job search process by working with a career coach.
- Access to statewide hiring events and job fairs hosted by the department throughout the year.
- Access to apprenticeships throughout the state. Apprenticeships are paid opportunities where workers gain on-the-job training to earn a certificate or credential in a high-paying industry.
- Services for veterans who are seeking employment.
- Access to various job training programs. Speak with a workforce consultant to learn more about what is available.
