BOISE, Idaho — To start the new year off on the right foot, Boise saw a 7 cent dip in weekly average gas prices on Tuesday.
The average price of a gallon of gas in Boise now sits at $3.20 per gallon, according to GasBuddy. Prices are roughly 32 cents per gallon lower than a month ago, and are just over a quarter less than a year ago.
The national average for a gallon of diesel has dropped 4 and a half cents in the last week and sits at an average of $3.96 per gallon.
The cheapest gas in Boise on Monday was priced at $2.99 per gallon while the most expensive gas was priced at $3.39 per gallon, a difference of 40 cents. For the state, the lowest price found by GasBuddy was $2.45 per gallon and the highest fuel price was $3.79 per gallon, a difference of $1.34 per gallon.
Nationally, the average price of gas fell roughly 2 cents per gallon in the last week, marking the average at $3.06 per gallon. That price is 17 cents less than a month ago, and just over 12 cents less than a year ago.
"After a brief hiatus, the national average has moved off its recent high, again falling closer to the $3 per gallon mark, setting up a potential second attempt at slipping below $2.99 for the first time since 2021," Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy said. "While gas prices have risen in some areas, such as California after refinery snags emerged, other states have returned to declines. Illinois is one such example, falling below $3 per gallon for the first time since 2021. The Great Lakes and Gulf Coast offer some of the nation's lowest gas prices, with the window of opportunity holding for the next few weeks to potentially re-test some of the levels seen a few weeks ago. The good news continues for average diesel prices, which slipped below $4 per gallon again and stand at their lowest level since the summer."
According to AAA, Idaho ranks 15th out of the nation for the most expensive fuel.
AAA also reports that the lowest price Idahoans' saw at the tank was on Dec. 31, and the most expensive was on Sept. 1, priced at $4.22 per gallon.
"Pump prices weren't as low as we would all like them to be, but Idaho drivers fared much better in 2023 than in 2022, paying an average of 56 cents less per gallon over the course of the year. On the national level, drivers paid 43 cents less in 2023 than during the previous year," AAA Idaho public affairs director Matthew Conde said.
"Russia's attack on Ukraine sent the global price of crude oil soaring in 2022, and gas prices spiked in the process. But despite continued conflict in that region and current fighting in Gaza, the lower cost of crude and cheaper gasoline gave drivers some much-needed relief in 2023," Conde continued.
