Nominations open for 2025's Idaho Teacher of the Year

The Idaho Department of Education said it's seeking nominations for teachers and educators of all grade levels. Nominations are due by March 18.

BOISE, Idaho — The Idaho Department of Education seeks nominations for teachers the public believes should hold the 2025 title of CapEd Credit Union Teacher of the Year.

The department in a news release Monday said applications for the award are now open, and all teachers and educators in the state can be nominees.

Superintendent of Public Instruction, Debbie Critchfield, said the contest is for Idahoans to "get to know some of the awe-inspiring educators."

“If you know of a teacher who’s gone above and beyond for their students, I’d encourage you to take a moment to let them know that their efforts are noticed and appreciated by nominating them for this honor,” Critchfield said.

Nominations are due by March 18, and nominated teachers will be notified on March 22. Teachers wanting to participate in the contest will have until May 20 to send in their applications.

The Idaho Department of Education said a blue ribbon selection committee will review applications, and the winner of the 2025 Idaho Teacher of the Year will receive a $10,000 cash prize from CapEd. Also, they will travel across the states representing Idaho and speaking to officials about best teaching practices.

As KTVB previously reported, Trent Van Leuven, a career technical education instructor, was announced as the 2024 CapEd Credit Union Idaho Teacher of the Year.

Leuven thought at Mackey Jr./Sr. High School and was selected from 69 nominees for his contributions to Career Technical Education, those being hands-on teaching about aquaculture facilities and other ag projects.
