Old Mercy Hospital to be demolished

The Nampa hospital caught fire Saturday.
The old Mercy Hospital building will be demolished.

NAMPA -- The owner of an old hospital in Nampa has decided to demolish the building after a large fire destroyed the roof, third floor and flooded the basement.

The Mercy Medical Hospital caught fire Saturday. The blaze took nearly 12 hours to extinguish.

The hospital was built in the 1910s and was run by the Sisters of Mercy nuns. It has sat vacant for 10 years. Building owner Douglas Tamura announced Tuesday that it would be demolished rather than repaired.

The hospital had been in line for renovations funded by the Nampa Development Cooperation prior to the fire.
