BOISE - Ninety-one-year-old Betty Green is quite a character, and today she got a big surprise as she was honored for being one of the first female police officers in Boise.
"Nobody gave me a clue,” said Green. “It's a wonder an old lady like me didn't have a heart attack and flop around on the ground and ship me off to the hospital.”
She worked as a detective in the juvenile and morals divisions, investigating runaways, shoplifting and alcohol and drug abuse, especially by minors.
She was also one of the first women to hold the Post Academy certificate.
"I worked with a great bunch of people, we were like family, looked out for each other. I did have a lot of challenges but they're in my memory bank,” said Green.
“I was the first woman to the advanced certificate but also the first one to make rank. I'm very proud of all of them of all of them, you know. It's a challenge, they have to get up every day, don't know what they're facing. I'm very proud of my service."
She was on the force 14 years and says growing up with seven brothers in Wilder and being a tomboy lessened the shock of working with the mostly male officers.
