Adaptive camp lets kids in wheelchairs be athletes

BOISE - Summer camp is a rite of passage for many kids. But not everyone gets the chance to go, especially children with disabilities.

Two women in Boise are making sure that kids in wheelchairs get that summer camp experience.

Emily Kovarik and Christine Walsh run the Idaho Youth Adaptive Sports Camp at Fort Boise Community Center.

The camp gives participants, ages 6 to 19, the chance to try their hand at a variety of sports, including swimming, canoeing, fishing, tennis, basketball, archery, and rugby.

"It exposes the kids to a sport that they sometimes don't ever really get to try," said Spencer Heslop, a former camper, who is now coach at the camp. "You also get to learn a lot about yourself."

The camp's organizers say its about more than just sports.

"I like this camp because it teaches the kids what is out there in the world," said Emily.

Since its inception, the four-day camp has gained a regional following. Athletes from Idaho, Washington, Utah, Oregon, Montana and Wyoming have traveled to Boise to participate.

Camp volunteer Jeff Sparks nominated Emily Kovarik and Christine Walsh as Seven's Heroes.

"If it wasn't for these two ladies putting this on every year, these kids would not have this opportunity do all these different sporting events," he said. "They are just two very special ladies, dear to my heart."

But they don't do it alone. The camp is sponsored by Boise Parks & Rec and St. Luke's Elks Rehab. Volunteers also play a big role in the camp's success.

"We have these wonderful volunteers that put forth a long week, we have excellent coaches that have been coaches for 20-plus years," said Christine.

These ladies know this camp is bringing joy, and making a difference.

"You see kids leaving here with smiles on their faces and they are brighter and feel stronger and more confident," said Emily. "It's just really heartwarming to see the kids grow and to realize what they can accomplish."

If you have a child in your life who would love this opportunity, you can plan for next summer.
