BOISE, Idaho — To help prevent underage drinking, the Owyhee County Sheriff’s Office held an alcohol compliance operation and caught two businesses and three individuals who illegally provided alcohol to minors, officials said on Tuesday.

The sting was held on Dec. 13-14, and deputies supervised underage volunteers who were sent to purchase alcohol directly from establishments. The volunteers also stood outside stores and asked customers to buy them alcohol.

Under Idaho law, anyone 18 or older who provides alcohol to someone under 21 faces up to one year in jail and fines ranging from $500 to $1,000 per violation.

One person who sold alcohol faces an additional driving under the influence (DUI) offense after purchasing alcohol for a minor, according to the Owyhee County Sheriff's Office.
