Payette County teen who allegedly planned to use a gun on school grounds appears in court

The Payette County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday said a 15-year-old who allegedly planned to "use a firearm on school grounds" is being held without bond.

NEW PLYMOUTH, Idaho — A 15-year-old teen who allegedly planned to carry out a shooting on school grounds appeared in Court on Tuesday. 

The Payette County Sheriff's Office said it initially started investigating the teen on Sept. 19, after receiving a tip from the Oregon State Police.

The teen was arrested on Oct. 10, the Payette County Sheriff's Office told KTVB. They also said no threats were made to the New Plymouth School District, but the Ontario School District.

"Although the incident in itself is disturbing, I have been in contact with the Payette County Sheriff and I can confirm that the 15-year-old in question was NOT a student enrolled in the New Plymouth School District and that NO New Plymouth students, staff, or schools were the target of any violence or at any increased risk of danger associated with the incident," the New Plymouth School District Superintendent said in a news release on Wednesday. 

The sheriff's office said it was an isolated incident, and there is no threat to the public.

The teen is being held without bond.

The 15-year-old violated the Terrorist Control Act and his charges are below:

  • Aggravated assault
  • Attempt to commit violent injury
  • Possession of sexually exploitative material
  • Threatening violence on school grounds

"We understand that this news is unsettling for parents and students of Payette County. The Sheriff’s Office is committed to ensuring the safety of our schools, students, and teachers. The Sheriff’s Office and its investigators are confident this was an isolated incident and we have addressed that concern. We are grateful to the individuals who brought this information to our attention and assisted us during the investigation," the sheriff's office said in a new release.
