HAGERMAN, Idaho — One person died and another was injured when a driver lost control of his vehicle and smashed into a tree, police said.

The crash happened just after 2 a.m. Wednesday morning in Gooding County, south of Hagerman.

According to Idaho State Police, 25-year-old Jacob Johnson of Twin Falls was driving west on 1200 East near Quail Run Lane when he missed a curve and went off the road. Johnson's pickup struck a tree, jumped over a canal and came to rest on private property.

A passenger in the truck died at the scene. That person's name is being withheld until family members are notified.

Johnson was taken to a Gooding hospital and later flown by air ambulance to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise.

Police say alcohol played a role in the crash.

At this point, there is no word on whether Johnson will face criminal charges.
