REXBURG, Idaho (AP) - A former Brigham Young University-Idaho student authorities say altered his college transcript to go from being a failing student to obtaining $7,000 in academic scholarships is facing charges.
Twenty-four-year-old Jacob Mahonri Espinal is charged with two counts of computer fraud and one count of grand theft.
Police in Rexburg started investigating in late October and Espinal was taken into custody on Nov. 9.
Investigators say Espinal was a student employee with access to the student system, and he changed his status from being on academic probation to being a straight-A student.
Police say he also sent his altered transcript to BYU in Provo, LDS Business College and the University of Utah.
Espinal's preliminary hearing is set for Thursday at the Madison County Courthouse.
