Police K9 Astrid returns to work, K9 Meko soon to return from medical leave

Ada County Sheriff K9 Astrid and her paw-tner in crime, K9 Meko, were stabbed by the suspect they were pursuing.

BOISE, Idaho — Ada County Sheriff's Office K9 Astrid was cleared Tuesday to return to work in the line of duty after she and her paw-tner in crime, Boise police K9 Meko, were critically injured after being stabbed by a suspect while on the job.

The Ada County Sherriff Office (ACSO) said on their social media that K9 Astrid successfully passed her final skills and medical tests, deeming her fit to return to work with "no problem."

"We are thrilled Astrid is back with her handler, JR McGee, and helping keep us all safe," ACSO said.

Although K9 Meko is not yet ready to return to full-time work, ACSO said she and Astrid are able to partake in drug detection and apprehension work.

Fortunately, with continued medical check-ups and a bit of TLC (treats, licks and cuddles), officers can expect their right-paw-dog Meko to be back on full duty in no time.

Both dogs will receive regular checkups to see if they have any lingering health issues.

As KTVB previously reported, both dogs were stabbed by a suspect on Jan. 24. The K9s spent two days in medical care and required surgery for their injuries.

Meko and Astrid spent two days under medical supervision. Thanks to a successful operation, both K9s were released to their caretakers to begin their recovery.

The Ada County Sheriff's Office's social media post:

We’ve got some nice news to share today. K9 Astrid is back to work! As you may remember, Astrid and Boise Police K9 Meko were both seriously injured when they were stabbed during a critical incident in late January. Astrid - and Meko – have been steadily recovering over the last month or so and both are officially back. Our K9 team put Astrid through a few final tests Tuesday afternoon to make sure she was ready to return. She passed both her skill and medical tests with no problem. We are thrilled Astrid is back with her handler, JR McGee, and helping keep us all safe. Boise Police tell us that Meko is mostly back to full duty – which means that both dogs are now doing drug detection and apprehension work again. Both dogs will get continue to get regular medical check-ups to make sure they have no long-lasting problems from the January incident. We want to thank everybody who has had a good thought for our dogs over the last few months. We really appreciate the support!
