CHALLIS, Idaho — Stephanie Crane, from Challis, went missing 31 years ago, she would have turned 40 on Sept. 28, but her birthdays were cut short. The Custer County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) said it has followed many leads since that time, and although many have been investigated, no one has ever found Crane, or know what happened to her.
"Some of these persons have been cleared and there are still some that are considered as possibly having something to do with her disappearance. These persons are still being looked into," stated the sheriff's office.
For police, the hard part about Crane's disappearance is that there was never a crime scene, and no witness of her being taken. She was last seen, 31 years ago, between the Challis High School and the Challis Lanes Bowling Alley.
"It is unlikely that Stephanie ran away or disappeared voluntarily, however she has never been found," a news release stated.
Earlier this year the CCSO received an anonymous tip about Crane and began searching an area of backcountry with the Idaho State Police, the Lemhi County Sheriff and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Sadly, Crane was not found. The search did lead law enforcement to believe other areas should be searched as well.
When she disappeared, she was 4'02" and 65-85 pounds. She was last seen wearing a maroon and white striped sweatshirt that said "GIMMIE" on the front, maroon sweatpants and white and maroon sneakers.
"This is an ongoing search, as of now we have not located anything," the CCSO stated.
Police are asking anyone with information to call the CCSO at 208-879-2232 to remain anonymous or call the CCSO's tip line at 208-879-5372 and leave a message.
