Suspect shot, killed in SWAT standoff near WSU campus after threatening to kill roommates

Washington State University alerted students on the south side of campus to shelter in place early Thursday morning because of a SWAT situation.

PULLMAN, Wash. — Pullman Police said one man is dead after a SWAT situation that forced a shelter-in-place near Washington State University overnight.

Police were called to apartments on the 1000 block of Latah around 8:37 p.m. on Wednesday night where they say a man in his 30s was threatening to kill his roommates. The two roommates were safely removed from the apartment.

Police said the suspect barricaded himself inside the apartment and fired several shots. Police evacuated other people in the area. Police said the suspect's behavior continued to escalate and he was shot by a SWAT team member.

The suspect was found dead inside the apartment.

Wendy Schuller, a mother of a student who lives in the apartments, said her son first heard shots fired around 2:15 a.m. on Thursday.

"For the next hour or so they heard intermittent shots fired. I think when they were evacuated he had counted 20 shots that he heard fired," she told KREM 2 News.

Schuller said her son was evacuated and taken to Beasley Coliseum. She shared a photo with KREM 2 News of people who had been evacuated from the apartment, standing in the street, waiting to be moved away from the area. As of Thursday morning, her son has not yet been allowed back into his apartment.

"This doesn’t happen in Pullman," Schuller said. "None of it is what you expect and what [is] supposed to be happening in student housing."
