BOISE -- A big renovation project is underway in downtown Boise.

The city's iconic River Sculpture is getting some much needed TLC.

The massive art piece, also known as "the crack," adorns the side of the Grove Hotel on the corner of Front Street and Capitol Boulevard. The sculpture has experienced some wear over the past 16 years.

Boise Public Arts Manager Karen Bubb said the city decided to rebuild it with new materials to make it more durable.

"We're doing things like changing the neon to led lights, the blue background will be changed over to a tile, which will be more sustainable and color fast into the future," she said. "So to really make these kind of structural changes, we have to disassemble the structure, do some evaluation of the concrete structure and then completely rebuild it from the ground up."

Even though the sculpture is being rebuilt, Bubb says they will stay true to the original artist's vision.

The project is funded by the city, Capitol City Development Corporation and the Grove Hotel. It's scheduled to be complete sometime next year.
