Safe driving encouraged around snow plows

The Idaho Transportation Department is encouraging drivers to be better prepared for winter conditions when snow plows take to Idaho roads.

BOISE — You got a glimpse of it last weekend, winter is officially here and more snow is on the way, and that means more challenging driving conditions lie ahead.

The Idaho Transportation Department held an event Wednesday to encourage safe driving around snow plows.

Every year ITD hosts this winter safety campaign called “Idaho Ready” that offers tips on how drivers can be better prepared for winter conditions when snow plow drivers take to Idaho's roads.

“Please, leave lots of room between yourself and the plow, and give the operator a little bit of courtesy,” said snow plow driver Travis Dodd. “Also, do not pass us on the right cause there is a lot of interesting stuff that comes out on the right side of the plow.”

If you absolutely have to pass a snow plow, Dodd says its best to just wait until the driver stops and then you can go around.

Dodd added that it is a lot safer for drivers to just stay behind the snow plow during bad road conditions.
