BOISE, Idaho — Over 30 school districts and charter schools in Idaho will receive funding to install special detectors in their schools to detect vaping. The detectors will be installed in the bathrooms and locker rooms, areas prevalent to vaping.
According to a news release from the Idaho Department of Education (IDE), the detectors are funded by a grant funded by the Idaho Millennium Fund and administered through the IDE. They said that the goal of the grant is to prevent vaping before it starts and to provide staff with added resources.
"Putting the right tools to address vaping into the hands of our school districts is an important first step in tackling this problem and ensuring the health of our students and educational communities," said Superintendent of Public Instruction Debbie Critchfield. "I hope that schools find this equipment to be an effective new resource in safeguarding the health and well-being of their students."
There were 59 eligible applicants for the grant, and 31 local education agencies were awarded funding. In order to get funding, the awardees had to provide evidence of a need for vape detectors, including providing details of their current efforts to stop vaping in their schools.
