BOISE, Idaho — Boise Mayor Lauren McLean on Wednesday named Shawn Wilson the new director of the city's Department of Planning and Development Services.

Wilson was one of three finalists selected on June 25 after the City of Boise said its internal review of applicants featured 36 candidates. Mitra Mehta-Cooper and Robert (Bob) Seale were also picked to participate in a series of panel interviews with representatives from Valley Ride Transit, Downtown Boise Association, and Capital City Development Corporation.

Wilson joined the city in 2014 and currently oversees Boise's facilities team, which leads city capital projects and maintains city assets, Wednesday's news release said. He has worked to support planning and implementation efforts of public agencies over the past 25 years.

"It is an honor to be selected to lead the Department of Planning & Development Services as we implement the modern zoning code and see our city create more housing at Boise budgets, incentivize more transit-oriented development and ensure we’re growing in a sustainable, climate ready way," Wilson said.

Planning and Development Services oversees development in the city, issues building permits, ensures projects align with city code and more. The City of Boise said Wilson has guided planning for the water renewal program, the Boise Fire Department, Boise Police Department and Boise Public Library.

"I’m so pleased that Shawn has accepted my offer to lead our Planning & Development Services Department at this critical time," McLean said. "Shawn is a trusted and respected leader at the city with a proven ability to get big jobs done. We worked hard to modernize our zoning code so that Boise gets to decide how Boise grows. I wanted to find someone who will lead us through implementing the new rules with a calm and steady hand. Shawn brings that and more."

Tim Keane previously served as Boise's PDS director before accepting a job with the city of Calgary, Alberta, after two years in Idaho's capital city. He was named General Manager, Planning and Development Services in Calgary.

Steve Burgos, who leads the Public Works Department, was appointed as interim PDS director by McLean. Pending confirmation from Boise City Council on July 16, Wilson will take over for Burgos on Wednesday, July 17.
