Simplot to serve up 5,000 pounds of free fries at bowl game

CALDWELL - Fans going to the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl will have the chance to get their fill on the food item the bowl is named after. Thanks to Simplot, there will be a whole lot of free French fries for fans who buy a ticket to the game.

Simplot plans to serve up thousands of pounds of French fries at the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. To make that happen, they'll use a giant fryer that holds 340 gallons of oil and can fry 2,000 pounds of fries per hour.

CALDWELL - Fans going to the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl will have the chance to get their fill on the food item the bowl is named after. Thanks to Simplot, there will be a whole lot of free French fries for fans who buy a ticket to the game.

On Thursday, a giant fryer built by Idaho Steel and Reyco, was put through a test run, just to make sure it will be able to handle the massive volume of fries.

The fryer holds 340 gallons of oil and can fry 2,000 pounds of fries per hour.

Simplot's North Dakota facility already does something similar for the annual Potato Bowl USA, held in September each year. But now there's an intra-company rivalry, and Simplot workers in Idaho think they can outdo their North Dakota counterparts who hold a record of serving 5,300 pounds of fries at a public event.

"We'll make sure we have plenty of ketchup and salt and all that kind of stuff," said Brad Thacker, a Simplot packaging manager. "Nothing better than an Idaho potato and making Idaho French fries."

The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl is set for 5 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 22. The fries will be served up during event's Fan Fest from 2 - 5 p.m. that day. For a look at all of the bowl's events, click here.
