Some ID ski resorts suffer in bad conditions, others succeed

BOISE -- While many of us are enjoying the warmer temperatures, it's a much different story for some of the ski resorts throughout our region.

Several are experiencing terrible conditions, and one has announced that the weather has forced an early season end.

Boise has seen record breaking temperatures recently.

While some ski areas can't handle the warm weather, others are actually doing so well, they're attracting skiers from other states.

At Bogus Basin, the slopes have been slushy and the powder full of puddles.

Bogus says this weekend's rain cut the number of skiers and boarders in half, compared to a normal weekend.

"Oh gosh, it settled down drastically. We had about two and a half feet and now we're down to 16 inches," said Don Schiermeier, Mountain Manager at Soldier Mountain Ski Area.

It was a similar scene at Soldier Mountain. The rain and warm temperatures have made conditions so bad that their season will end after this weekend. Their revenue is down by at least half from previous years.

"It's a little sooner than expected for our closing. It's just mother nature isn't cooperating with us," said Schiermeier.

It wasn't just warm weather, but strong winds that caused an issue at Tamarack over the weekend. Fallen trees on power lines caused an outage that shut down the resort on Saturday. They're now back open, but did lose a few inches because of recent temperatures.

"It's not unusual for us to have this mid-season warming trend. We typically experience a couple rain events, a warming trend, at some point during the season," said David Papiez with Tamarack Resort.

It's a bit of a different story at Brundage Ski Resort.

"We're a little bit higher than some of the other places. We're a little bit colder than some of the other places," said April Whitney with Brundage Ski Resort. "We're just fortunate. We've had quite a bit more snow than some of the other places, so things are just working out in our favor this year."

The resort is actually getting new snowfall and has such a healthy base, they've attracted a four-day collegiate racing event.

"Other resorts and other areas are struggling with their snow base and they just weren't sure they would be able to put on a quality event," said Whitney.

Sun Valley is also enjoying a sunny outlook with 14 new inches recently.

"You're affected more by perception, by people who think that if it's warm somewhere else, it can't be snowing here. But, they are very, very good ski conditions. It's as good as it's been all winter," said Jack Sibbach with Sun Valley Ski Resort.

With warm weather hurting conditions in nearby states, they've even seen a bump in business.

"I rode the lift yesterday with a couple from Utah who said they came up here because they heard we had great snow," said Sibbach.

Ski resorts across the northwest in Washington and California are also seeing rough skiing conditions.

The event now coming to Brundage was scheduled for Powderhorn Resort in Colorado, which is struggling with lower snow levels.
