'Spokes of Sustainability': A Meridian bicycle program gives free bikes to people in need

People have to register for a free refurbished bike with the city by Friday, April 26.

MERIDIAN, Idaho — Riding a bike is not only great exercise but it can also be a way for people to have mobility without a car, and not everyone can afford that. The City of Meridian recognizes that and has a program called "Recycle a Bicycle." Meridian residents, both young and old, can apply for a free refurbished bike.

"Programs like Recycle a Bicycle, are where solid waste diversion really shines," said Solid Waste Advisory Commissioner, Mark Nelson. "Meeting the needs of our community members while keeping waste out of the landfill is a win-win situation for the City of Meridian." The City of Meridian Solid Waste Coordinator, Sayard Schultz, added, "We're excited to have this program back for another year. Interest in the program continues to grow and we're grateful to have the opportunity to serve our community."

The bikes are free, but requests need to be made by Friday, April 26 at 5 p.m. People can apply here

Pick-up for bikes is at the Meridian Transfer Station between April 29 and May 3 at times yet to be announced and at the Unplug and Be Outside Kick Off event on Saturday, May 11. People will get bikes based on their needs and kids need to be accompanied by parents to pick them up. For more information on when to pick-up bikes people can go to the City of Meridian website
